2014 Harvest a long & steady ride
We now have all Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Riesling picked and in the winery, with only the later ripening Grüner Veltliner left to come from the McKee vineyard in Blind River.
What looked to be an early fast harvest following an early budburst and warm spring has turned into a long and steady vintage. Several weeks of unexpected cloud and cooler temperatures in late summer delayed the start of picking but Marlborough was back to its classic best in March with warm days and cool nights giving us absolute control over our picking decisions.
Fiona describes the Sauvignon Blanc from this vintage as full of crunchy acidity and wonderful flavours, while she says the Pinot Noir is looking dark and ripe through ferment. “A lot of hard work and detailed management in the vineyard blocks has allowed our fruit to reach full physiological ripeness with very well balanced vines and yields.”
